Mother’s Day 2024 Gift Guide

“Only old people gift pajamas”

I laughed as I tore open my gift.

It was Mother’s day and my husband’s side was exchanging gifts at the family home.

To my horror - it was a set of baby pink and blue tye dye pajamas from my husband’s grandmother.

Tragame. Tierra.
(translation: bury me now)

My ears burned from embarrassment. The words couldn’t come fast enough as I profusely apologizing to her for this thoughtful gift that had been tainted by my untimely joke.

I would never receive another pair of pajamas from her again.

Knowing what to get the women in your life that are moms, moms in the making and mothers by default of life’s circumstances can be daunting.

Like - here’s a bouquet of flowers and a gift in a dollar tree bag to commemorate you having raised me to be a pretty decent human being.
Gag.

As a mother I now get it. The rush and inconvenience of “just getting her something” has been replaced with “What does she need? What does she want? What will she use? How will this make her feel? ”

There’s intentionality now. Where before there sat another task on the to-do list.

And so it is my goal to help you consider these tips as a way of making your gift mindful, meaningful and long lasting.

As a rule of thumb your gift should:

  • serve to solve a problem

  • demonstrate your attentiveness of their likes/dislikes and

  • Tell a story

I’ve broken down this post into a series of categories to make it easier on you.

  • The Edgy Mom

  • The Basics Mom

  • The Fit Mom

  • The Colorful Mom

CURATED FOR HER

The Edgy Mom

The woman that comes to mind is spicy. She’s the one you call when you want to do something daring but don’t want to do it on your own. She’s adventurous, a little controversial and always down for a good time.

  • Experience-centered event tickets like:

    • a local band concert

    • upcoming poetry night

    • a speakeasy

  • Oversized band tee. the versatility of the oversized band tee cannot be denied. You can dress it up, dress it down, you can faux crop it, wear it as pajamas! There

  • Harness Belt - for the days she needs to be corporate but wants to add a little edge.

  • Roller Skates or long board. The goal of this gift is to promote outdoors play. You may need to add safety pads while you’re there.

  • “Hot Mess Express” basket

    • Mini portable speaker

    • Snacks

    • Sunglasses (faux prada link)

Basic Mom

Anything BUT basic - she’s the woman that puts little to no effort into being minimally cool. If you didn’t know her any better you would think nothing phases her. This woman is grounded, self-aware and in control of her chaos. She values functionality, lives in a solid pair of Levi’s and is still working on her morning coffee at 2 pm.

  • Gift card to her favorite jean store

  • A new bra. If you’re reminded of when you used to grow up with your distant relatives sending you underwear for the holidays I’m not sorry. Just like you, she could probably use an upgraded bra.

  • Pay for a service order (grocery delivery, meal prep, dry cleaning pick up, etc.) Anything to help alleviate a problem for her this week. Imagine what you would do with 2 hours of not having to go grocery shopping with a toddler? Golden, right?

Fit Mom

Pilates princess? Or Muscle Mami? She’s that one friend in the group that will make it to the gym in a storm. Her dedication to her health (both mentally and physically) is a non negotiable. Here’s what she’ll love:

  • New gym bag. This gymshark bag (pictured above) is chef’s kiss. Watch this video for a full list of the essentials that I pack in my lift bag.

  • Athletisure set

    • Gymshark matching sets are not only cute but their support is everything you desire as a mom whose body has and continues to undergo changes. Your fupa will thank you.

  • Massage gun

  • Offer to take care of the kids one day so they could attend a class

  • Gym Class like this silent disco spin classes (find one near you)

She Turns Heads

Colorful Mom:

Unapologetic. Bold. Full of life. This is the maximalist that always asks: “What’s the BEST that can happen” In my life the women I think of that are colorful are the ultimate girl’s girl. Nothing stands in their way when it comes to achieving what they want.

  • Bold Stationery like new sticky notes + magnets

  • Brightly colored car seat covers! This may sound insane but where I’m from our commute is a minimum of 40 minutes whereever you go. She’ll appreciate having an “on brand” vehicle experience.

  • Hair accessories like this abstract clip

  • Gift card to a cute vintage thrift store where she can find all kinds of gems

Additional Tips:

It’s not the what but the why that counts when it comes to gifting. A story behind each choice goes so much farther than “here’s another purse”

Imagine being gifted a new wallet because at the dinner date you had with your sister after having attended a local museum exhibition a $10 bill fell from your wallet and that’s when she noticed it was coming apart at the seams. She went back to the exhibition to pick out a wallet she felt was most close to your aesthetic and would always remind you of whåt a great night the two of you had.

It’s the story.

You won’t remember what you gifted 5 years ago for mother’s day. But you will remember how warm you were made to feel. How appreciated and valued and overflowing with joy you were at being surrounded by your children on this day catering to you.

Happy Mother’s Day Beast family.
I hope it is everything you deserve and so much more.
